Here's What Nobody Tells You About Business Clarity | Strategy Before Systems

Here's What Nobody Tells You About Business Clarity
Something I'm learning as I work with business owners - something that keeps coming up over and over - is clarity. But not in the way you might think.
Let me paint you a picture. You're probably sitting in your office right now, feeling like you should be working ON your business instead of IN it. Maybe you've bought every system, tried every process, hired more people - but something's still off.
Here's what I've found: You don't have a systems problem. You have a clarity problem.
Let's Get Real About Clarity
I had a client the other day who swore they knew exactly where their company was headed. Then I asked them to write it down. Three years from now, what does your company look like? What are people saying about you in the community? What awards are on your wall? What's your company culture like?
Suddenly it wasn't so clear anymore.
Here's What Actually Matters
Strategy comes before systems. Every time. And strategy starts with clarity on:
Where you're really headed (not just "growth" - I mean really, what does it look like?)
What your company stands for when you're not in the room
What moves you should make next
Who your people are and if they're in the right seats
I'm a big believer in looking up and looking around before we start building systems. Why? Because you can develop the best processes in the world, but if they're pointed in the wrong direction, your company can still nosedive.
The Difference It Makes
When we get crystal clear on these things, something shifts. My clients stop sitting in their office wondering what they're supposed to be doing. They get laser focused because now they have this massive strategic plan that we reverse-engineered from their three-year vision.
And their team? They finally understand where they fit in the bigger picture. They know how to use their gifts to help get there. That's when things actually start getting done.
Here's What This Looks Like in Real Life
Let me give you an example. I had a client in the trades who was working 80-hour weeks, couldn't step away from the business, and was drowning in the day-to-day. Sound familiar? They had systems. They had checklists. They had all the tools. But nothing was working right.
When we sat down and got clarity, here's what we found:
Their team didn't really know what success looked like
Their core values were just words on a wall
They were making strategic decisions based on what their competition was doing, not where they wanted to go
Once we got clear on these things, everything changed. They started making decisions faster. Their team started taking initiative. And for the first time in years, they could actually take a vacation without the whole place falling apart.
Ready to Get Clear?
Look, if you're drowning in the day-to-day or feeling stuck, don't jump straight to building more systems. Get clear first. Everything else falls into place after that.
Want to test where you're at? Try this: Turn off your phone, grab a piece of paper, and write down exactly what your company looks like three years from now. Not just revenue numbers - I mean really paint the picture. If you're struggling with this, that's your sign. You've got a clarity problem.
And that's exactly where we need to start.
Want to Learn More About Clarity?
Let me share some resources that transformed how I think about business clarity:
Watch this video on Vivid Vision by Cameron Herald
- it'll change how you think about business vision. His book "Vivid Vision" is a must-read for any business owner wanting real clarity.
As Ryan Deiss says, "Clarity proceeds mastery."
Patrick Lencioni nails it too: "If you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time."
And Gino Wickman reminds us, "Without clarity of vision, your people will create their own."
Getting Clear On You First
Here's something I do with every client - we get clarity on who they are first. I use three powerful tools:
Enneagram (for understanding your core motivations)
Kolbe A Index (for how you naturally take action)
Working Genius (for where you add the most value)
Then we do this with their team. Because when you understand yourself and your people, everything else gets clearer too.
